Within the Franco-German Initiative for the Comprehensive Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons in the Western Balkans, Minister of Foreign Affairs Srđan Darmanović led earlier today a Montenegrin delegation, to the second high - level meeting, which took place in Berlin.

Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Germany and France, Heiko Mass and Jean – Yves le Drian organised the meeting. The meeting was attended by European Commissioners for Internal Affairs and Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy, Ylva Johanson and Oliver Varhelji and the Ministers of Foreign and Internal Affairs of the Western Balkans, who thus demonstrated, once again, a significant role in implementing arms control policies and the support to the contribution of regional and global stability.

As a credible partner, Montenegro remains ready to contribute in development efforts and implementation of policies and the highest standards in this domain, in order to make the Western Balkans region a safer area to all of us, Minister Darmanović pointed out.

The uncontrolled proliferation and illegal trade in small arms and light weapons, has an alarming impact on peace and stability, sustainable development, but also human rights, which are being violated, exactly for these reasons, in many parts of the world, the Head of Montenegrin Diplomacy stated.

Speaking about the progress that Montenegro has made through the implementation of certain targets in the Roadmap so far, he added that future steps towards combating the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons and associated ammunition in the Western Balkans, will ease further efforts of our region in fulfilling key security requirements, needed for the European integration.

The hosts of the event praised progress and willingness of the Western Balkans Six (WB6) to contribute to a safer environment, which is in strategic interest of both, the EU and our region. The French Foreign Minister particularly highlighted that official Paris wants to become more involved and strengthen its cooperation with the Western Balkan countries, in order to remove obstacles to their EU membership.

Minister Darmanović attended a lunch that German Foreign Minister Heiko Mass hosted for the French foreign ministers, the Western Balkans six, the EU Enlargement Commissioner and the OSCE Secretary General. On this occasion, they exchanged opinions on strategic issues, global security challenges, terrorism, illegal migration, economic development and regional cooperation.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the Minister also had a series of bilateral meetings.
