Earlier today, Ambassador of Serbia to Montenegro Vladimir Božović was summoned at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in order to be handed a protest note regarding recent events in front of the Embassy of Montenegro in Belgrade and last night's attempt to set fire to a Montenegrin flag.

Secretary-General Miodrag Kankaraš presented a protest by the Montenegrin Ministry of Foreign Affairs, strongly condemning the repeated attempts to set fire to the Montenegrin flag and attack on the Embassy's premises, to which state officials of Serbia failed to react. "Certain public figures' statements in the previous period endangered the security of our diplomats," Mr Kankaraš stressed, hopeful that the official Belgrade will react immediately in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations in order to ensure the integrity of the premises of the Embassy of Montenegro in Serbia, as well as the inviolability of the state symbols of Montenegro.

He stated that the uncontrolled protests in front of the premises of the Embassy of Montenegro in Belgrade, the uncivilised behaviour of protest participants and the attempt to set a Montenegrin national flag on fire contradict the principles of good neighbourly relations between the two friendly states and the principles of international law on ensuring the smooth and secure functioning of diplomatic and consular missions in the receiving country.

Ambassador Božović condemned the act as inappropriate, pointing out that it in no way reflects the official position of either the State of Serbia or its citizens. "The Republic of Serbia condemns the attempt to firing and attempts to burn the Montenegrin flag, which will be officially stated today by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," the Serbian Ambassador said, conveying "the regret of Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dačić over the said act." He also emphasised that in the communication with Minister of the Interior Nebojša Stefanović all measures are being taken to protect the premises and staff of the Embassy of Montenegro. He expressed respect for Montenegro as a neighbour and an independent state, highlighting that Serbia does not want to interfere in the internal affairs of Montenegro.

Ambassador Božović, following instructions from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, refused to accept the protest note.
