Dubrovnik: Minister Darmanović participates in annual Dubrovnik Forum

Minister of Foreign Affairs Srđan Darmanović participated today in the annual international conference Dubrovnik Forum, at the invitation of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Croatia Marija Pejčinović Burić.

The Forum was opened by Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković.

Speaking within the Panel entitled “Strengthening Resilience by Countering Fake News and Media Manipulation”, Minister Darmanović noted that the foundations of quality decisions and democracy are in accurate information, and that the transmission of fake news to the public constitutes a serious threat to modern society.

He empshasised the importance of access to objective reporting, as well as support for media activities aimed at placing credible information to the public.

Therewith, Minister Darmanović pointed out that joint efforts must be aimed at finding modalities for preventing abuse and spreading false information, without jeopardising freedom of expression.

The central topic of this year’s thirteenth annual international conference Dubrovnik Forum was “Strengthening resilience – the Mediterranean, Europe and the Western Balkans”. Prime ministers and foreign ministers of the countries of the Western Balkans and the European Union, as well as representatives of international and leading think-tank organisations spoke within the panel discussions.

The Forum focused on challenges posed by migration, terrorism, climate change and another threats that are testing Europe and the wider Mediterranean area on political, security, economic, social and cultural level. Among other things, the participants discussed the deepening of market integration and expanding business, trade and financial cooperation, as well as improving overall connectivity – transport, energy, economic, digital and people-to-people.

On the sidelines of the Forum, Minister Darmanović met with U. S. State Department Director for South Central European Affairs Matthew Palmer.
