Vilnius: Montenegro's full compliance with EU foreign policy positions is an excellent example to follow

MVPMinister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro PhD Srdjan Darmanovic paid a working visit to the Republic of Lithuania where he met with Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius, Parliament (Seimas) Speaker Viktoras Pranckietis, Defense Minister Raimundas Karoblis, Deputy President of Parliament and Chairman of the Committee on European Affairs Gedimins Kirkilas, Chairman of the Friendship Group of Montenegro and Lithuania at the Seimas Gintaras Vaičekuskas, as well as other high level Lithuanian officials.MVP

In the focus of talks was further improvement of good and friendly relations with the Republic of Lithuania, as an important foreign policy partner especially when it comes to Montenegro's integration processes, through the strengthening of political dialogue and enhancing economic cooperation.

Minister Darmanovic thanked Lithuania for its strong support to Montenegro's Euro-Atlantic integration, as well as continuous support during the EU negotiation process.

"Lithuania strongly supports European integration of Montenegro, which was especially demonstrated through an open and continuous advocacy for enlargement policy during your presidency of the Council of the European Union, which is now also confirmed by the Strategy for the Enlargement of the Union to the Western Balkans", stressed Darmanović. On this line, the head of Montenegrin diplomacy said it is particularly significant that Lithuania is keeping the consistency with the EU position for the process to remain entirely based on individual merits.

He pointed to the importance of intensifying the cooperation in the field of defence, especially regard the joint activities within the Alliance. In this context he reiterated interest in continuing the training of the Army of Montenegro members within the Baltic Defence College and attendance of English language courses in Lithuania.

Lithuanian officials expressed their satisfaction over the visit of Minister Darmanovic and stressed the importance of further improvement of bilateral contacts at the highest level. They have emphasized membership in NATO and concrete partnership actions, which have shown that Montenegro belongs to the communities of democratic values, thus contributing to the international security and regional stability.

MVPThey commended the success of our country in the field of European integration, assessing that Montenegro is the leader and factor of stability in the region, but also a reliable partner of the European Union. Bearing in mind the full compliance with the EU's foreign policy positions, they said that Montenegro is an excellent example to be followed. In this context, they’ve confirmed that EU enlargement policy, in order to be credible, has to be fully based on the individual merits of each candidate country.

The interlocutors pointed to the importance of parliamentary cooperation, both through the work of parliamentary bodies and joint formation of groups of friendships.

They also stressed the importance of continuing cooperation within the Twining projects, assessing that there is also a room for improving cooperation in the fields od education, justice, information and communication technologies, as well as in the area of economic diplomacy, through the transfer of experience.

During the meetings, interlocutors exchanged the viewpoints regarding the current political situation in the country and the region, security challenges and the importance of continuing the integration processes as an important instrument for preserving stability in the Western Balkans region and Europe as a whole.

During the visit, Minister Darmanovic visited the University of Vilnius and met with the rector Arturas Žukauskas.
