Bratislava: Slovakia’s presidency will fully support Montenegro

MVPEIThe Government of the Republic of Slovakia welcomes the implementation of key reforms in all areas and will contribute, during its forthcoming EU presidency, to accelerating Montenegro’s EU accession process, the visit of State Secretary for European Integration and Chief Negotiator Aleksandar Andrija Pejović to Bratislava concluded. The Chief Negotiator paid a visit to Slovakia on 5-6 April, where he met Government and Parliament representatives in charge of European affairs. His hosts noted that Slovakia will continue supporting, both unilaterally and through the Visegrad Group, and strongly promoting the progress and full integration of all Western Balkans countries, as well as for their closer coordination as regards development aid and programmes for supporting democratisation.

During the meeting with Slovakia’s foreign minister Miroslav Lajčak, Ambassador Pejović presented the current state of play in the process of EU integration, as well as the planned activities and measures in the areas of the rule of law, economic governance, and meeting the preconditions for opening negotiations in new chapters. He noted that a special emphasis will be put on making sustainable and measurable results in the rule of law area, towards which end necessary efforts have already been taken through the reform of the judiciary, prosecution, and fight against corruption and organised crime. He thanked Mr Lajčak for Slovakia’s continued bilateral technical assistance and support to Montenegro and the Western Balkans in the process of EU integration.

Minister Lajčak congratulated Montenegro on the results, noting that it has in a short period of time made great success in integration, and noted Montenegro has an imminent European future. In that context, he noted in particular Montenegro’s positive role in the region as the frontrunner in implementing reforms and bringing the Western Balkans closer to the EU. He said that Slovakia will give full and active support to Montenegro during its EU presidency in the second half of 2016, with the view to resuming the process of launching negotiation chapters.

During the meeting with State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs Ivan Korčok, Ambassador Pejović discussed the concrete areas of cooperation during the upcoming presidency, the political and economic situation in Montenegro, and the prospects for Montenegro’s further EU integration.

At the meeting with the Chairman of the European Affairs Committee of the Slovak Parliament Lubos Blaha and the committee members, Ambassador Pejović exchanged views on meeting the commitments related to EU integration and the role of parliaments in negotiations and European affairs. Parliament representatives congratulated Montenegro on adopting important laws and setting up key institutions that will guarantees the attainment of measurable results and further progress towards membership.

During his visit to Slovakia, Ambassador Pejović held a presentation hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia and the Slovak Association for Foreign Policy, which he delivered to the diplomatic corps in Bratislava. He also gave a lecture on Montenegro’s EU accession process to the students of the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations at the Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica.
